What is a Radiologic Technologist?
Professionals in the field are known by different names–radiologic technologists, rad techs, x-ray techs, and radiographers. Their role is to provide high quality images of the body to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Radiography is both an art and science using x-rays to image organs, bones and blood vessels. Technologists work in many settings including inpatient hospitals, emergency rooms, outpatient offices and may be called upon to travel to patients’ homes. Rad techs work closely with radiologists; physicians who interpret the images to make diagnoses.
Modern radiologic sciences are considered safe professions, and thorough training and instructions focus on safety protocols and measures.
Employment Outlook
Radiologic Technologists are聽 in demand. The 24-hour need for medical images provides incredible flexibility for techs. Techs work full-time, part-time, or per diem at hospital, outpatient, or travel facilities. There are day, evening, and overnight shifts available seven days a week at many clinical locations.
The expects about 20,000 new job openings in the United States each year for the next decade. More opportunities will continue to open to for those with advanced education into such as CT-scan, MRI, Mammography or Interventional Radiography.
